In this recent Community event, Docusign University Product Trainer Chessie took a deep dive into Docusign Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM)—focusing on how conditional merge tags can streamline contract workflows. Attendees learned how to automate repetitive tasks, simplify document generation, and optimize contract negotiations, approvals, and signatures.

Key takeaways:

  • Document generation basics: Chessie walked through the process of filling out a form, merging the data into a template, and generating a document in CLM that’s ready for approvals or workflow automation.

  • Merge tags & XPath queries: Each form field has an XML-based merge tag indicating where to place data. XPath queries pinpoint the exact node in the XML.

  • Conditional merge tags: These allow you to dynamically include or exclude entire text blocks based on specific conditions. For example, an extra clause can be displayed if a field like Is_this_a_three_way_NDA is marked “Yes.” By using <Conditional> and <EndConditional> tags, content adjusts automatically.

  • Select vs test conditions: Conditional Select checks for specific string matches, while Conditional Test evaluates boolean expressions. Both require precise spelling and structure.

Can a conditional merge tag be used in conjunction with a checkbox from an eSignature template?  That is can you conditionally display text in a CLM Template based on a Checkbox Tag in that Template being checked or not?  The checkbox tag is placed on the CLM template using an eSignature Template.
