Merging templates in DocuSign is a miserable process, as is making significant updates to a file found in multiple templates.

We have the ability, in DocuSign, to apply a template to a file uploaded to an envelope, but we cannot apply a template to a file added to a Template. Why? I understand the workflow or recipients might not align, but that’s our problem to deal with if we use the feature. It would save my organization many hours of work. We have to update docs regularly to remain compliant.

Thanks so much for your idea @Zoe Bee. After review, we found that this request can be accomplished using existing features within DocuSign.

While it’s not currently possible to directly apply a template to a document inside another Template, there is a helpful workaround that allows you to build a new template using multiple existing templates at the same time.

You can still accomplish the same outcome by following these steps:

  1. Create a new Envelope.
  2. Select Use a Template, then check and select multiple templates at once.
  3. Click Add Selected to load all documents, recipients, and fields into the envelope.
  4. Click Save and Close to save the envelope as a Draft.
  5. Open your Drafts folder.
  6. Click the three dots.
  7. Select Save as Template.

This will generate a new template that combines the contents and configuration from all selected templates.
