If available in your Docusign eSignature account, you could set up document visibility to add a document when creating the envelope, which is only visible for your internal management and will not be visible to external recipients.

Thanks — does that also work if we’re not the ones creating the envelope, but only receive a notification that a contract needs to be signed?
Thank you Michael!

No, this only works when you are sending something for signature.
When you receive something to be signed, you are no longer able to edit the documents. Even if you were able to, the sender would be able to see any document you uploaded, as they own the envelope, so this is not an option.
If the signing request goes directly to management, you may not even be aware of them receiving it. Alternatively, do you request your contractual parties to send it to a generic email address, which then re-assigns it to the correct signer within your company? In that case, you can provide a reason, which will be sent alongside the notification to the new signer, but this does not allow you to upload an additional document; only a limited text entry is permitted.
