Where on a certificate of completion should it show that the sender signed the document prior to sending to me?
Hi
The sender's signature before yours is not mandatory, that is, the sender may have prepared the envelope requiring you to sign before him.
My suggestion is that you check the Envelope Hhistory, which will show the entire timeline of the envelope until now. One of the ways to check it, is to open the signed document and follow this instructions:

Check this article for more information: Envelope History

I have the envelope information but don’t know what it would say to show that the sender signed it before sending to me.
Can you give me a specific example?
Hi
Yes, of course! Let me show you a quick example.
First point you can check on envelope history is the Envelope Recipients information. Usually, the order showed here (from left to right) is the signature order:

Also, if you go down to the Activities, you can check the timeline (from older to newest):

Finally, if you have access to one Docusign account, you can open your account and access your envelope by Agreements menu > Inbox.

I hope this information can help you!
Why does confirmation email say that the document was completed, when the activity history does not show that the sender ever signed it, just that they created the envelope and sent it?

This attachment means that the document has been completed (by all necessary parties). If it’s the same document and there is no signature from the sender, he/she did not add himself/herself to sign the document.
It’s important to remember that the sender does not necessarily have to sign the documents he/she sends.
