I’ve added an anchor string for a signature in DocuSign. How can I automatically insert the signing date when the document is signed?
Hello
Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Docusign Community! We appreciate your question and assure you that we are fully committed to providing you with the best service possible.

Automatic Anchor Text and Tags
Automatic anchor text is a feature that allows text to be used in documents as a placeholder for signature, initial, and other tags for particular Salesforce Role Names. You can manually place the text into your documents and then set the roles for recipients when adding the recipients to an envelope. When you send the document using DAL, the appropriate Docusign tags for the selected role are placed in the automatic anchor text locations.
Important: By design, the only role allowed to trigger the anchor tags are “Signer” + the dedicated signer order number (e.g. Signer 1,2,3,4,5,6, etc.). The number must correspond to the one assigned to the tags. For example, \s1\ will be assigned to Signer 1.
Automatic anchor tags and recipient signer roles
The following table shows the default AutoPlace fields (formerly anchor text) used for different Docusign fields (formerly tags), based on the Role assigned to a signer in Salesforce. This is the text typed in documents as a placeholder when creating and saving the documents.
Salesforce Role Names and AutoPlace Text | ||||
Field Type | Signer 1 | Signer 2 | Signer 3 | Signer 4 |
Signature | \s1\ | \s2\ | \s3\ | \s4\ |
Initial | \i1\ | \i2\ | \i3\ | \i4\ |
Optional Initial | \oi1\ | \oi2\ | \oi3\ | \oi4\ |
Name | \n1\ | \n2\ | \n3\ | \n4\ |
Company | \co1\ | \co2\ | \co3\ | \co4\ |
Title | \t1\ | \t2\ | \t3\ | \t4\ |
Date Signed | \d1\ | \d2\ | \d3\ | \d4\ |
Examples:
- To add a Signature field for Salesforce Role Name Signer 2, you would type \s2\ in the document.
- To add a Company field for Salesforce Role Name Signer 3, you would type \co3\ in the document.
- To add a Title field for Salesforce Role Name Signer 1, you would type \t1\ in the document
Place Automatic Anchor Text in a Document
When creating or editing a document, type the AutoPlace field in the appropriate location in the document.
- After typing the AutoPlace field, change the color of the text to white or to the background color of the document. This way, the AutoPlace field does not appear when the document is viewed, making the AutoPlace field invisible to the document recipients.
In the following example, AutoPlace fields are added to place an initial, signature, name, title, and date signed fields. The text has been highlighted in the example for visibility.
Use Automatic Anchor Text with Custom Tags
In addition to standard AutoPlace fields, you can use AutoPlace fields to place Docusign custom fields, including those with merge field settings, in documents. You can do this by using a special macro sequence when defining the custom fields. Follow these steps:
- Create a new custom field. For information about creating custom fields, see Create and Edit Custom Fields.
- In the Anchor field for the custom field, type the text for the AutoPlace field for the field. The text for the AutoPlace field must include the string {r}. The {r} represents the numbered position in the Salesforce Role Name list when the AutoPlace field is added to a document and the {r} is replaced with the appropriate number in the document.
Example Custom Field AutoPlace Fields
Custom Field Type | AutoPlace field is | Document AutoPlace Field for Role Name 1 | Document AutoPlace Field for Role Name 2 |
Text | \tbx_{r}_text\ | \tbx_1_text\ | \tbx_2_text\ |
Check Box | \cb_{r}_yes\ | \cb_1_yes\ | \cb_2_yes\ |
This feature also supports the use of Salesforce related lists as returned by merge field settings. In this case, the text for the AutoPlace field typed in the Anchor field uses the format {r,startRow-endRow}.
Example Related List
Custom Field Type | AutoPlace field text is | Document AutoPlace Text for Role Name 1 |
Text | \listprice{r,1-5}\ | \listprice1_1\ |
If the custom field is created with the merge field settings as shown in the preceding table, and the five AutoPlace text entries are typed into the document, then five Text fields are automatically placed with the AutoPlace text when the document is sent from the Opportunity with eSignature. The values in the Text fields are the first five values of the Price Book entry list price for this Opportunity.
IMPORTANT: Anchor tags with merge fields do not allow to order the related items. The order of the item will not necessarily correspond to the one you will have in Salesforce. For a more advanced control of the merge of related list items, you will have to use our Docusign Gen module.
- To allow others in your organization to use the new custom field, including your Salesforce Mobile App users, select Shared in the Form Field settings.
- Click Save to save the custom field.
When creating or editing a document that will use the AutoPlace fields for custom fields, type the text for the AutoPlace field in the appropriate location in the document as described in Place AutoPlace Fields in a Document.
Use Automatic Anchor Text with Merge fields
Automatic anchor text can be used to populate and automatically merge fields into the document. You can set the anchor text directly into the merge field from the Docusign envelope template configuration. Follow these steps:
- Log into Salesforce
- Click on the App launcher on the right end side and look for Docusign
- Click on the Docusign app launcher
- Click on the tab Docusign envelope template
- Select the template of your choice (the list of merge field is common to all template)
- Click edit
- Go the step “merge field”
- Add or edit a merge field
- At the bottom, an “anchor text” field is displayed
- Enter your anchor text. For example: \acct_{r}_siteid\
- Select Save
- Add the anchor on your template document, replacing the {r} by the correct number: \acct_1_siteid\
- Save and upload your document in your flow
- Always make sure that the Docusign envelope template recipients are configured with the role “Signer” + the number of their signing order (e.g. “Signer 1”)
