I am building a DocuSign envelope template inside Salesforce using DocuSign App Launcher(DAL). I have the following two questions, please:

  1.  I am adding many merge fields associated with Lead object, and one of these fields is Social Insurance Number. Based on best security practices, this field is enabled with the 'Hide text with asterisks' feature. The writeback is enabled for this field. But when the envelope is signed, the associated field on the Salesforce lead record is not updated. Is this a limit with DocuSign, or is there something wrong?
  2. For a specific merge field, I don’t want the field value to be pre-populated from the associated Salesforce field when the envelope is opened, but I want it to be written back to the Salesforce record. Is this possible?

Hello @aalamour1981,

Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Docusign Community! I appreciate you bringing your question to this Community.

  1. The issue isn’t a limitation of Docusign, but rather something else is likely wrong. Usually, if a field can't be updated, it’s because Salesforce is blocking the update. For example, formula fields in SF can't be updated, and if SF requires a specific format for the data, the signer must provide it in the Docusign field. These are restrictions set by Salesforce. There could also be other factors, like flows or triggers, that prevent the updates. Additionally, if you do not have the right permission to edit or write to the necessary fields, updates will fail. So the solution to these issues varies case by case.
  2. Merge fields are set up to always fill in automatically. While write-back is another possibility, pre-filling will always occur. There are some workarounds, but they tend to involve complex customizations that need a developer, so professional services are recommended.
