I know it’s been asked and answered countless times, but I’m trying to access a Docusign contract that was signed back in 2015 and does not appear in my archived documents. Apparently with a free account, there is a limitation as to how long documents are saved in the system. Is there a way to retrieve this file, or is it lost?

Hello @Furious
Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Docusign Community! I understand how frustrating it can be to look for an important document—especially one that was signed years ago—and not be able to find it in your account. I’m really sorry you’re experiencing this situation. Documents like contracts often hold significant value, so it’s completely understandable that you’d want to retrieve them. Rest assured, I'm here to help.
If the document doesn’t appear in your archive, these are the typical recovery options:

  • Check the original Docusign email

The completion email often includes a downloadable PDF copy and certificate of completion.

  • Contact the sender

The sender’s DocuSign account usually retains the envelope even if recipients cannot see it.

  • Search your account thoroughly

Go to Manage → Completed

  • Use search filters or envelope ID if available.

Docusign does not normally delete documents automatically while an account is active. But documents can be permanently removed if either a retention policy was configured or the account storing the envelope was closed for more than ~90 days.
