NVDA Reader - Unable to read document content -- only fields.

I have a confirmed accessible Word document that I have uploaded to a template.  I have made sure all fields have meaningful data labels and tool tips.  I have sent the form to myself so I might test the signing experience with NVDA.  (I am just learning how to use NVDA by the way.)

I am able to navigate through the fields just fine.  All of the fields announce properly.  However, there are additional paragraphs that provide important information that are not part of the form fields.  How do I tell the screen reader to read them?  I have tried

  • NVDA + Down Arrow: Start reading from the current position.
  • NVDA + Control + R: Read the entire document.
  • NVDA + Tab: Navigate between interactive elements and content.

These do not read the content of the document.

The ability to read the content of the document as well as the form’s fields is vital in a Government situation, especially in a Release of Information form or a Tennesen warning.  In these cases, there might be only one field - the signature field.  The individual needs to know what they are signing.

I’m hoping my issue is my lack of knowledge of NVDA.  Please advise.

Oh - I am using Microsoft Edge.
