Multiple Signers in a Document Template

Question

I have a Document Template that has 3 total signers. The Document Template is used across 10 Envelope Templates. In some Envelope Templates, I need all 3 signers, no issue there. The problem is, on certain Envelope Templates that use the Document Template, I only need 2 signers.

My question is: If I send an Envelope Template (via the API through my own app) and only assign email values for signer 1 and signer 3, will signer 2’s fields be removed automatically? Or will the envelope fail to send, or even get stuck on an a non-existent “Signer 2”?

I understand that quick workaround would be to create a Document Template for 2 signers, and a Document Template for all 3 signers, but that approach feels like it defeats the purpose of Document Templates. I also tried creating the Envelope Template using the Document Template, deleting signer 2’s fields from the Envelope Template, but editing the original Document Template re-applies Signer 2’s fields (as expected).

We apologize for the inconvenience, and I’ll be glad to help you with this.If you send an envelope using a template with three signer roles but provide only two signers in your API request (omitting signer 2), the tabs (fields) assigned to signer 2 will NOT be included in the envelope. Docusign automatically removes the tabs for any recipient role that is not instantiated in the envelope creation request. This is the expected and standard behavior for Docusign templates and envelope creation via the API.
