In person signer

On a certificate of completion, how can I verify (beyond all doubts) that a signer was/wasn’t in person signing a pin pad? This has become a legal matter in which we need to know if signer (which is now deceased) was actually present at the time.

Hello @Suzanne96,

Thanks for reaching out, and welcome to the Docusign Community!

The Certificate of Completion (CoC) provides an electronic audit trail, including timestamps, IP addresses, and authentication steps. It does not provide proof of whether a signer was physically present at a device.

In the In‑Person Signing process, the sender (or host) starts the signing session and then hands over a device they own ( tablet, laptop, or phone) to the signer. The signer completes the signing directly on that device while the sender is present.

Because of this setup, the CoC cannot confirm physical presence. The only reliable way to determine if the signer was actually present is through the sender, who managed the session and passed the device to the signer.

I hope this helps clarify things! If you found this response helpful, feel free to give it a like or mark it as the best answer. Let us know if you have any further questions

Hello @Suzanne96,

Thanks for sharing additional details. Could you please send me a screenshot (with any personal info blurred/removed) of the COC so we can check it further?

I can do that. Is there any way I can message privately to explain in more detail what is happening?

Was this envelope sent via email for approval? (This is an unknown email address that none of his accounts were tied to and no one has any knowledge of him ever having. We think it’s a fraudulent email address that was created solely for this purpose.) Also, the ip address of his signature match’s the bank’s internal MAIL SERVER? What does that mean?

Hello @Suzanne96,

Thanks for sharing the screenshot of the Certificate of Completion. From what’s shown, there are no in‑person signing events recorded. If the audit trail lists an email address that isn’t recognized, only the sender or DocuSign Support can verify it. As moderators, we can explain general functionality, but we can’t confirm whether a specific email address is fraudulent or why it appears in the envelope history.

Regarding the IP address, the audit trail includes technical metadata, but we don’t have the ability to interpret or validate what a specific IP address means.

If further details about the CoC are required, it would be best to reach out to Support for clarification. Open a case in the Docusign Support Center
