If the text box is read only, then the Recipient, in this case your boss, would not see the surrounding box. In this situation it should actually default to the first field that needs to be filled out or signed. When I am adding text to a box prior to sending I typically click the field then go to the "Add Text" box to the right panel to add the value prior to sending.
