Question

How can we identify envelopes more easily? Envelope ID is too large.

Hello, I have been tasked with finding a way that we can identify envelopes without using the Envelop ID which has so many characters it is hard to work with. Ideally we would create and envelope and each one would have a unique identifier with 5 or less characters so that it is easy for people to pull the specific envelope they want.

They want “to assign envelopes a unique auto incrementing number (i.e. contract number for reference – contract# 55467 in the corner of the DocuSign)” but I have not been able to find a solution that does this. It seems that DocuSign decided that the large IDs should suffice, but is there really no other way we can do something like that internally? Even some kind of obscure workaround helps. Thank you in advance, even if it is just to say “You’re out of luck, there is no way” 😅

@srpts

You can create an Envelope Custom Field called ShortID or ContractNumber.  This does not auto-increment on its own, but if you feed it the number, it becomes the envelope’s searchable friendly ID.

Envelope custom fields can be used in searching and filtering inside DocuSign Admin and Reports.
