hello @newtoclm
Welcome to the DocuSign Community!
In DocuSign, if a folder is inheriting security from its parent and you use the “Update Security” task to add view-only access for a specific group:
-
The folder continues to inherit existing security permissions from the parent.
-
The “Update Security” task adds or modifies security for the specified group (e.g., gives Group A
"View" access).
-
All other inherited permissions remain unchanged. You're not overwriting the entire permission set — you're just adding or updating for that one group.
-
This is not the same as replacing the entire security configuration unless you check the option to override or break inheritance (which is available in some workflows/configs).

Thanks!

Thanks. So would I need to add that group for each subfolder by using the “add security” task or would it then inherit downward. It’s not exactly clear in the directions.
Hello @newtoclm
If you add or update security for a group on a specific subfolder, that change applies only to that subfolder not to any subfolders beneath it.
🔁 Folder Security Inheritance Rules (General):
By default, subfolders inherit security from their immediate parent.
If you use the “Update Security” on a folder, this only modifies the permissions on that folder.
Subfolders of that folder will not automatically inherit the new group permission unless you explicitly apply it to them as well.
Thanks!
