This either sounds like using the Auto Place feature or using Anchor Tags if you are pulling a document in from a source like Salesforce or other integration. Anchor Tags is what I used with Apttus/Salesforce integration, but the tag or text you place could be custom, it didn't have to be a specific set of text.
