Is there a way to preserve comments made in a word document when attached. I am fine if those get converted to pdf, but currently when uploading a word document with comments - the comments get removed in the PDF conversion process.

Yes, there is a way.
Save your Word document with all the comments as .PDF file before adding to an envelope.
The converted document to .PDF from Word will have all the comments then you just need add it to the envelope, all comments will be preserved.
