This typically has to do with you having the template open in multiple tabs. Just to be safe, I'd close all tabs, all browsers, and try again.

Why can't there be an answer on getting a template to lock? The only thing I see is "Go to Actions and select lock", which is so useless when there isn't a lock selection in any of the available actions.

I duplicated another template in the only tab I have open for DocuSign, made my changes, and then got the error message above. I really hope I didn't just lose all that work (ugh!)

Actual solution so you do not lose your work: Click the X in the top-left and choose Save--you should get a successfully saved message in the lower-left. Then, click that X again and choose Discard Changes to get out of the editor. If you go back to Edit the same template, you should see that all of your work has been preserved.
It appears the Save and Close button in the bottom-right produces the “not locked” error, but at least for me, the X in the top-left did not and kept me from losing my changes.
