Our users generate envelopes using a template. From the template, I would like to include placeholders that reference the signer’s organization and other custom fields used in the document (contract number, end date, etc).

Is it possible to insert and populate custom field placeholders in envelope messages or private messages using templates? Can this be done when sending envelopes without a template?

Hello @mfg

Yes, this can only be done in Subject Line and the maximum length of the subject line is 100 characters, including any merged text.

Hello @mfg ,

Thank you for reaching out here in Docusign Community.

Yes, it is possible to include multiple customer fields in an envelope using a template where this will be visible to the recipient only when sending it in bulk.

This can also be done in an envelope without using a template. However, if you will send it in bulk to make a message or field visible only for each recipient you have to create a CSV and manually correct their identifier.

These options seem specific to a Salesforce integration. Is this functionality available in the DocuSign interface absent a Salesforce connection?

Hello @mfg

Yes, it is available in eSignature or Docusign Interface.

Apologies for the confusion. This can only be done using a template. Sending an individual envelope won’t allow you to merge fields which you are looking for.

We are using a template but I’m not finding an article explaining how to incorporate the template’s merge fields as placeholders into the messages of the envelope.

I’m trying to scrape the ‘send_a_copy’ / CC recipient message for merge field data using REGEX and template escape characters, ie:

Executed Agreement for #Customer Name#

Contract ID #123456#

I assume this would mean adding envelope custom fields via placeholders like in a traditional mail merge, but I’m not sure how to define or what to do with them when it comes to the message itself.

In the documentation it looks like you can do this in the subject though through a drop down

If this can only be done via subject line, is there a max character limit for DocuSign in subject lines?
