I am an end user. Setting up a simple contract template to sign, but I keep getting this error message “The request body is missing or improperly formatted. No tabs specified.”

What on earth does that mean and how do I fix it?

Hello @maverick123

Thank you for reaching out, and welcome to the Docusign Community! We appreciate your question and assure you that we are fully committed to providing you with the best service possible.

The error message “The request body is missing or improperly formatted. No tabs specified.” occurs when attempting to create a template. This typically occurs when sending an envelope (often via an API or template) and no fields ("tabs") have been assigned to the recipient. This is a configuration issue in the envelope or template setup.

This error occurs when:

  • No fields (tabs) are assigned to the recipient in the envelope/template.
  • If using the API or composite templates, the tabs (fields) for the recipient are not properly mapped to the document, or the recipient is not mapped to the document at all.

Resolution:

  • Ensure that the template or envelope includes at least one field (tab) for every recipient role.
  • If using the API, make sure the tab definitions include a valid documentId and are mapped to an actual document.
  • If using the web UI, edit the template and drag at least one field (e.g., Signature, Date, etc.) onto the document for every recipient.
