Did DocuSign cut off access to free employee accounts?

I’m a former DocuSign employee who received a ‘free for life’ single user account back in 2016.  I’ve since been using the account on occasion to send / sign documents without issue.

Just today, I went to send a document for signature and am getting the following error message:

Error: The envelope allowance for the account has been exceeded.

I’ve never had - or hit - a usage limit before... though my usage has never been high enough to trigger any reasonable limit. The biggest problem is, there is nowhere in my account that shows me what my limit might be. Does it reset each month? Each year?  If I do indeed have a limit, how long do I have to wait before I’m allowed to send again?

Can anyone out there provide any insight?

Hello @DSAC,

Thank you for your message and for sharing your account details. After checking with our team, we can confirm that we do not provide guaranteed “free for life” accounts. While some legacy accounts may have had special terms, they did not include unlimited envelopes or lifetime usage.

I understand this may be unexpected, and we truly appreciate your long‑standing use of our service. If you’d like to continue sending documents, you can sign up for a consumer account, which will provide a defined envelope allowance and ongoing access. 👉 Docusign plans and pricing

Thanks. That’s unfortunate and definitely not what we were originally told. Regardless, water under the bridge.

How do I know what the send limit is on the current account and when it resets (monthly? yearly?).

Hello @DSAC,

Thanks for following up. Your account is tied to one of our legacy plans, and unfortunately, the documentation for those older plans isn’t as detailed. That’s why we don’t have full visibility into the send limits or reset schedule.
