Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me understand this issue.

I’m not sending envelopes - I’m only using DocuSign to sign documents.

Everything was working perfectly until recently. Now, whenever I try to complete the signing process, I receive the following error:

ENVELOPE_SEND_ERROR

Thinking it might be an issue with my account, I signed up for a free trial. That allowed me to successfully sign another 3–4 documents, but now I’m getting the exact same error again despite my trial still being active. I have retried uploading the same documents as I have signed before but they still do not work - so the document itself is not an issue.

Has anyone experienced this before or know what could be causing it? Could this be an account limitation, a signing limit, or a system issue? As far as I know there is no signing limit for a free account.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @UttaraVaidya,

We appreciate you reaching out to the Docusign Community and are delighted to have you join us.

I’m sorry to hear you’re encountering an error while signing documents. I’d be happy to help.

While free trial accounts include a limited number of envelopes for sending, documents signed through the Sign a Document feature do not count toward that limit. However, the feature is still subject to reasonable usage limits, which may result in restrictions if exceeded.

Since you’re receiving an ENVELOPE_SEND_ERROR message, we recommend trying again at a later time to see if the limitation refreshes. If the issue persists, it may require further investigation.

To have this reviewed in more detail, please submit a Support Case and include a screenshot of the error message, along with any relevant accoutn information. This will help the Support team determine the cause and provide the appropriate resolution.

Good Morning Noralynn,

Thank you so much for your response!

Unfortunately, opening a Support Case is only available for paid accounts, so that isn’t an option for those of us on a free account or using the free trial.

I have to say this is quite disappointing. The “Sign a Document” feature is presented to be free, yet it appears to have undocumented usage limitations (unless I missed that). Even after starting a free trial, I’m still being restricted without any indication of what the actual limit is or when it resets.

If there are reasonable usage limits, it would be very helpful if those limits were clearly communicated so users know what to expect rather than encountering an error with no way to troubleshoot it. At this point, it feels like the “free” feature isn’t really free if it becomes unusable after an unknown threshold and there is no support channel available to investigate the issue.

I appreciate your time and your willingness to help and I hope this feedback can be shared with the appropriate team, as I believe greater transparency around these limitations would greatly improve the user experience.

Warm Regards,
Uttara
